Why keep flowers for summer celebrations, when they can have a real impact during winter events? Many people associate floral decorations with spring and summer occasions, but there are plenty of winter-blooming plants that will make your holiday celebrations come alive! Discover the best flowers decorations for the winter holidays and brighten up your home or venue this season.
Place Settings for a Dinner Party
Whether you are hosting a dinner party for a few friends, or a group of friends and family, it is always important to make each guest feel extra special. A simple, yet effective way to do this is to create pretty place settings, using winter-blooming flowers. Your choice of flowers may well depend on your colour scheme. If you are planning a brightly coloured backdrop, consider winter jasmine. These pretty yellow flowers add a delicate ambience and can be bound in twine, and attached to a postal tag for a pretty place setting. Purple pansies are extremely festive, and these too can be bound with yellow winter jasmine to create an impact at the dinner table. Should you like crafting, and have some time before your dinner party, press some pansy heads onto individual pieces of white card. These can act as impressive place settings.
Winter Holiday Bunting
Bunting is usually associated with summer gatherings, but winter bunting can be just as festive. Take sprigs of holly and its berries, and team with a white flower such as winter honeysuckle. Winter honeysuckle is extremely fragrant, and so will smell delightful in addition to looking beautiful. For rustic bunting, tie the sprigs of holly and berries, and twigs with winter honeysuckle together. Tie several bunches together before tying them at intervals along with a two-metre-long piece of twine. Drape your bunting above windows and across doors. If you drape the bunting across doorways, tie a bunch of mistletoe in the middle guests can kiss underneath as they pass through.
Table Settings
Adorn your table with stunning floral centrepieces for a breathtaking impact. The traditional Christmas plant, the poinsettia is always a firm favourite and can be used on its own or with a little extra decor. If you have a large table, place potted poinsettias along the centre at intervals. Then, place pine cones, holly leaves and berries around the base. Should you be feeling particularly creative, paint the pine cones in glitter paint, or silver or gold. This is a fun activity for children and families will enjoy seeing the results of their finished craft pieces.
Wreaths
A traditional winter holiday wreath is used to signal the beginning of festivities and the winter season and is usually hung on front doors. Rather than have a wreath hung only on your front door, hang a wreath on the door of living areas and the kitchen for a simple way to decorate your home this festive season. You can easily create your wreaths, using twigs that have been foraged during a winter walk. Children will love to get involved with this activity so send them on a quest to find the driest, most supple twigs in the park or woods. Once you have gathered an abundance of twigs twist them into a circle and use twine to secure them in place. You can then decorate the wreaths with berries, holly, and pine cones. Alternatively, if you prefer a more contemporary take on the holiday wreath, use the big, bright heads of the camellia flower and sweet alyssum for a fragrant, pretty wreath.
